DES MOINES, IA – Last week Russia expanded its list of Iowans who were permanently banned from the country including every single member of Congress, Democrat and Republicans, except for one. Iowa’s senior Senator Charles Grassley was noticeably absent from the list. In response, Democratic candidate for US Senate, Vice Admiral Michael Franken issued the following statement:
“It appears war criminal Vladimir Putin has rolled out the red carpet for his buddy, Senator Grassley. This isn’t surprising in that Grassley is formally endorsed and embraced by Putin’s ally former President Donald Trump. Grassley’s silence on the matter is golden, but not surprising as he has been complicit in the failure to properly investigate Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election. Grassley has also fueled disinformation theories of Ukraine interference in the 2016 election.
By not refuting lies and actively spreading disinformation, Grassley has become central to the disfunction and dissension in America. His vote against a bi-partisan commission to investigate the January 6th insurrection stains his legacy, and in true Putin fashion, rolled out the red carpet for insurrectionists from the far right. The fate and future of our democracy are in grave danger, and I know I will be on the right side of history. One might ask Senator Grassley, ‘Who’s side are you on’?”
